Which tech careers are open to women in the USA?

Women in most countries today are free to choose the work they care about, leaving old prejudices behind. Every tech profession is well within reach, both to learn and to be hired into. The more the industry grows, the greater the demand for talented people — and gender has nothing to do with it. Tech also allows remote work and fitting a job around children and other commitments, which means interesting work and a full life at the same time.

Is tech suitable for women?

Women have always been in tech, not merely of late. The world's first programmer was Ada Lovelace, who wrote the first algorithm for a computing machine, and Grace Hopper was the first programmer to write code for a computer. Sadly, information technology was long dominated by men. But the breakthrough in tech and the rising demand for good people have opened wide prospects for women in the field.

There are no limits here. The stereotype that these professions do not suit women belongs to the past. More and more women now choose the field, taking technical degrees or learning programming, design, digital marketing and other professions on courses.

Popular tech careers among women

Looking at which tech careers our own female students are most drawn to, we put together this list:

  • SEO specialist. Optimises sites so they rank well in search at the least cost in money and time. Training takes about two months, and the work always calls for planning and creativity.
  • QA tester. Analyses software during development, writes a test plan and tests it in various ways. Reports defects and helps developers fix them properly.
  • Copywriter. Produces written content to a client's brief: advertising copy, product descriptions, articles, everything on a website, social media posts and so on. A copywriter combines flawless writing with a knowledge of marketing and a creative streak. A good option when you want to enter tech with no experience.
  • Content manager. A popular role for women in the USA. It involves developing a content strategy, filling a site or social channels and keeping the information current. The work requires HTML, an understanding of how search engines work and the fundamentals of marketing.
  • UX/UI designer. Appeals to anyone with creative ability and visual taste. The designer builds usable, attractive and highly effective interfaces that serve both the client's goals and the user's. A designer needs creativity as well as a grasp of usability fundamentals.

There are other roles in demand too: web analyst, front-end coder, paid search specialist, project manager, performance marketer, social media manager, programmer and more.

Can you get into tech with no experience?

Work for women in the USA is not limited by traditional ideas of what they can do. Tech training is open to everyone, and it has been demonstrated repeatedly that women are in no way behind men in this field. What matters is not stopping at what you have already achieved: practise a great deal, stay purposeful and keep improving in the profession you chose.

Getting into tech without experience is possible too. What counts more is demonstrating the skills clients actually want — the ones you pick up while studying — along with reliability and the ability to manage your time. Clients today care more about dependability and quality, and many startups are glad to take on beginners.

Working in the USA after studying at PASV

PASV differs from ordinary paid courses in a number of ways, and one of the most important is its internship. Every one of our students, regardless of gender, takes an internship at a real tech company. That means a good job in the USA stops being out of reach or a long, complicated road. You get excellent preparation, you come to understand what employers actually ask for, and thanks to our training you will genuinely be ready for it.

Those who stand out are offered jobs by the companies. Men are offered them too, of course, and with the strong current attention to gender equality, companies hire both women and men. PASV makes the road to working in the USA clear, structured, effective and not drawn out. Even if no offer follows your internship, you come away with invaluable experience and references you can put in front of other firms as a candidate.
